Recently, the Colonial city of Granada has become a popular destination for experienced travelers and for people who want to get off the beaten track.  Due to its popularity, many North Americans and Europeans have built second homes there; these rentals meet the standards of discriminating visitors and also reflect the spirit of this wonderful Colonial city.  We offer a few special homes for your consideration.

Founded in 1524, Granada is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas.  Situated on the edge of Lake Nicaragua and in the shadow of Mombacho volcano, Granada is a romantic city of colorful colonial homes and churches.  The history includes the exploits of the infamous William Walker, who attempted to burn the city down in 1856.

In this relaxed and mellow city, you can wander in the buildings and stores of the

Parque Central, take a horse drawn carriage to tour the city, and visit the many churches.  Don’t miss the Museum San Francisco, located in the oldest church of Central America, the Convento e Iglesia de San Francisco which was founded in 1529.

Walk by the shores Lake Nicaragua for the cool breeze and views and take an hour boat ride to enjoy Las Isletas…..more than 360 islands created when the Mombacho volcano exploded 20,000 years ago.  Many of the islands have lovely houses used as seasonal retreats.

The most rewarding pastime in Granada is to enjoy the colorful architecture and to smile and nod to all the friendly Nicaraguans sitting in their rocking chairs on their front stoops.

Good dining options abound, and there’s always something to do in Granada!

Granada is only a 3 to 4 hour drive from Tamarindo.  We can arrange for a private van to drive you to the border where you will be met by another van on the Nicaraguan side.   Or you can fly from San Jose to Managua in less than an hour; then driving time from Managua to Granada (45 km) is about an hour.  Special “trans- Central American” buses depart daily from Liberia and will drop you off right in Granada.
